Urushi Lacquerware Artist
Nikolas Pinon
Based in Paris, France, the artist specializes in urushi lacquer art and the restoration of lacquer works.
After studying furniture making at École Boulle, the artist developed a fascination with Japanese lacquer and went on to study lacquer techniques in Spain. Later, the artist traveled to Japan and studied under former Tokyo University of the Arts professor Nagayoshi Onishi, deepening knowledge of traditional Japanese lacquer techniques, including kanshitsu(dry lacquer).
History
Since 2013, the artist has pursued creative and restoration practices centered on Japanese lacquer.
Established a studio in Paris in 2017.
In 2020, received the Liliane Bettencourt Prize for the Intelligence of the Hand for Entropie, and the Silver Award at the Ishikawa International Urushi Exhibition for Tipo.
Selected for the Villa Kujoyama Residency in 2024 and the Villa Albertine Residency in New York in 2026, gaining international recognition for innovative approaches to lacquer art.
Today, while preserving traditional techniques, the artist explores new possibilities through the integration of emerging technologies such as 3D printing and laser processing.
