Drawing inspiration from Heian-period literature and classical waka poetry, the artist explores the beauty of kanacalligraphy through graceful lines, carefully balanced negative space, and a harmonious dialogue with handcrafted paper.

The subtle rhythms created by variations in ink density and expressive brushwork invite viewers to experience each work not simply as writing to be read, but as a landscape to be contemplated.

Rooted in tradition while resonating with contemporary sensibilities, the artist continues to pursue new possibilities for kana calligraphy.

History

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1955.

Born into a family of kanji calligraphers, the artist began studying kana calligraphy under Ichiro Higashiyama at the age of twenty.

Alongside an active exhibition career through major exhibitions including the Nitten Exhibition, the Yomiuri Shodo Exhibition, and the Kenshin Shodo Exhibition, the artist is also dedicated to nurturing the next generation of calligraphers through a private studio and university-level education.
