Textile Dyeing and Weaving Artist

Gentaro Nitta

Born into a family of Yonezawa-ori textile weavers, the artist carries forward generations of traditional craftsmanship while redefining the role of woven textiles in the contemporary world.

Viewing cloth not simply as a material, but as an accumulation of history, culture, and human thought, the artist creates works that bridge tradition and the present through the enduring language of weaving.

History

Born in Yamagata, Japan, in 1980.

After working for a Kyoto obi manufacturer, became the fifth-generation head of Yonezawa Nitta.

Recipient of numerous honors, including the New Artist Award at the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition and the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award.

Currently a Full Member of the Japan Kōgei Association and a certified Traditional Craftsman.
